Haavisto: Negotiated Settlement the Only Path to End Sudan’s War

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, stressed that a negotiated settlement remains the only viable path to achieving a comprehensive ceasefire and a sustainable resolution to the conflict, while calling for concrete steps to reduce violence and launch an inclusive political process.

Haavisto made the remarks, cited by the United Nations website, as he continued his visit to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, which began last Friday. On Wednesday, he took part in meetings of the Quintet, comprising the United Nations, African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), League of Arab States and European Union, along with UN agencies and the Sudanese Foreign Ministry.

The consultations are part of the good offices efforts led by the Quintet to hear assessments from Sudanese stakeholders on the political and security situation and exchange views on ways to advance an inclusive political process aimed at achieving peace.

During his visit, Haavisto also held a series of constructive meetings with government officials, civil society representatives and political forces. His discussions focused on de-escalation measures, the protection of civilians and the exchange of detainees, while also stressing the need for a unified national examination for all students.

Haavisto is expected to continue his meetings with political and civilian forces over the coming days before concluding his visit at the end of this week.
