Georgetown Institute Calls for Immediate Release of Nagwa Musa Konda

The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) has called for the immediate release of prominent Sudanese womens rights advocate and peace activist Nagwa Musa Konda, expressing deep concern over reports that she has been sentenced to one year in prison following her prolonged detention by the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N).

In a statement, the institute described the reports as deeply alarming, noting that Konda has devoted decades to humanitarian work, championing the rights of women and children and leading peacebuilding initiatives in Sudan, particularly in the Nuba Mountains.

GIWPS said it has worked closely with Konda on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) initiatives in Sudan and internationally, praising her long-standing commitment to advancing peace and protecting vulnerable communities.

The institute warned that the action against Konda reflects a broader and dangerous pattern of threats facing women peacebuilders in Sudan and other conflict-affected countries.

GIWPS urged the international community to use all available diplomatic tools to press for her immediate release, support human rights and peacebuilding efforts in Sudan, protect civilians, and help bring an end to the countrys ongoing conflict.

The institute also noted that Sudan ranks 177th out of 181 countries in the GIWPS Women, Peace and Security Index, which measures womens inclusion, justice, and security worldwide, underscoring the severe challenges facing women in the country.
