North Kordofan State has witnessed a significant military escalation this week between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), affecting several areas across the state, including the capital, El Obeid, which came under RSF drone attack on Thursday morning. The civilian death toll from attacks during the week has risen to 38, up from 33 reported during the previous week.
At least 15 people were killed and several others injured on Thursday, June 11, after an RSF strategic drone targeted El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State in central Sudan.
The attack struck residential neighborhoods, including Al-Muwazafin district, killing three members of the same family and leaving numerous others wounded. The exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed. The injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment amid the city’s deteriorating healthcare situation.
Earlier this week, according to the Emergency Lawyers group, a military drone operated by the Sudanese army targeted the Adid Raha area in Sodari locality on Wednesday morning, killing four civilians and injuring another. The attack came only hours after a separate strike the previous evening targeted two civilian vehicles in the same area, marking a continued escalation of attacks affecting civilians and civilian objects. A similar attack in Sodari earlier in the week reportedly killed three people.
According to the Sudan Doctors Network, four people were killed and 12 others injured this week as RSF drones targeted several locations in El Obeid. One of the attacks struck Dalil Cemetery during a funeral procession, killing four mourners and injuring seven others. Another drone attack targeted a fuel station in the city, leaving five people seriously injured and raising concerns that the number of casualties may increase as shelling of civilian infrastructure and public facilities continues.
In a separate incident, a truck driver was killed after his vehicle, loaded with food supplies, was struck in the Jabal Kordofan area.
Earlier this week, a drone attack targeted the market of Abu Zaeima in Hamrat El Sheikh locality, North Kordofan State, killing 11 civilians and injuring dozens more, according to a preliminary toll that is expected to rise.
The impact of these attacks has been compounded by the continued targeting of civilians while traveling, the deterioration of healthcare services, and the destruction of medical infrastructure. As a result, patients and wounded civilians are often forced to travel long distances to access treatment under increasingly dangerous conditions.
The attacks also underscore the severity of the humanitarian crisis facing civilians, whose lives, markets, daily activities, and means of transportation continue to be affected by the conflict.
The United Nations and several human rights organizations have repeatedly called for the protection of civilians and an end to attacks on residential areas and civilian facilities, stressing that international humanitarian law prohibits indiscriminate attacks against civilian populations.
