The Quint Mechanism on Sudan, comprising the African Union (AU), IGAD, the League of Arab States, the European Union (EU), and the United Nations (UN), has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting an inclusive Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led political process aimed at advancing sustainable peace in the country.
In a statement issued following consultations with a broad range of Sudanese political and civil actors in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 3 to 5 June 2026, the mechanism said discussions focused on possible pathways toward establishing the proposed preparatory committee for an inclusive Sudanese-Sudanese political dialogue.
The statement noted that Sudan continues to face profound political, humanitarian, and security challenges, adding that the consultations provided an important opportunity to encourage dialogue among Sudanese civilian and political actors, promote confidence-building measures, and support efforts to establish a credible and inclusive political process capable of addressing the root causes of the conflict and laying the foundations for a just and lasting peace.
According to the mechanism, the consultations were “challenging but productive.” It highlighted that Sudanese participants from different political backgrounds worked together constructively to draft texts and proposals and submitted written memoranda to the Quint Mechanism, with additional submissions expected in the coming period.
The mechanism expressed confidence that the groundwork is being established for more substantive discussions involving a broader range of stakeholders and a wider spectrum of Sudanese voices.
The Quint Mechanism reiterated its commitment to accompanying Sudanese stakeholders in their efforts to advance a peaceful and inclusive political process within a coordinated framework supported by regional and international partners.
It also reaffirmed its full respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, while rejecting any attempts to undermine these principles, including through the establishment of parallel governance structures that could further fragment the Sudanese state.
The statement called on all influential actors to support de-escalation efforts and help create the conditions necessary for achieving a negotiated and durable peace in Sudan.
