Violent Clashes Erupt Between Anti-Narcotics Forces and Drug Traffickers East of Berber

Heavy clashes broke out on Tuesday between a unit of Sudan’s Anti-Narcotics Police and a group of drug traffickers and smugglers in the Al-Talawibih area east of the city of Berber in River Nile State, highlighting growing security challenges linked to combating drug trafficking in Sudan.
According to field sources, intense exchanges of gunfire involving heavy weapons took place between the two sides, resulting in a number of injuries. The wounded were reportedly receiving medical treatment, while no confirmed information has yet emerged regarding fatalities.
Sources said specialized security forces continue to pursue and track suspected smugglers across the region’s desert terrain, while additional military reinforcements have been deployed to support ongoing operations and secure the area of engagement.
The incident comes amid increasing concerns over the expansion of drug trafficking and smuggling networks in Sudan since the outbreak of the war. Exceptional security conditions, widespread displacement, and weakened monitoring of some border areas and desert routes have created favorable conditions for criminal groups to operate.
Observers say trafficking networks have exploited the instability accompanying the conflict to expand their activities, taking advantage of the complex security environment and Sudan’s extensive land borders. In response, authorities have intensified anti-narcotics campaigns and launched targeted operations against smuggling hubs and supply routes.
River Nile State has gained increasing importance in recent anti-drug efforts due to its strategic geographic location and its connection to several roads and transit routes frequently used by smuggling networks moving between different parts of the country.
As security operations continue in the Al-Talawibih area, local communities are awaiting an official statement that is expected to provide further details on the clashes, any seizures made during the operation, and the final outcome of the ongoing security campaign.
