ALPS group Demands Urgent Measures to Protect Civilians in Sudan

Moatinoon
The Allied for Life and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) group called on the conflicting parties in Sudan to allow humanitarian pauses to allow life-saving supplies to reach areas, particularly North Darfur and Kordofan, and to remove obstacles to the movement of civilians away from danger.

The group, which includes the United States and other countries, expressed its deep concern about the continuing deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan, including the increasing number of people suffering from severe malnutrition and famine, and the multiple obstacles hindering access to those in need, delaying or impeding response in key areas.

In a statement today, the group said that civilians continue to pay the heaviest price of this war. The statement added that the parties to the conflict must take urgent measures to protect civilians and allow and facilitate humanitarian access to those in need, in accordance with their obligations under international humanitarian law and the Jeddah Declaration on the Protection of Civilians in Sudan, signed in May 2023, as the situation in Sudan deteriorates and humanitarian needs reach critical levels.

The group called for the lifting of all bureaucratic obstacles that impede and prevent humanitarian activities, and for humanitarian actors to be able to safely deliver assistance throughout Sudan to all civilians in need, without fear of reprisal if they provide assistance in areas controlled by other parties.
