US Sanctions on Sudan Take Effect
Moatinoon
The US State Department announced, in a formal notice published today in the Federal Register, that the government of Sudan has used chemical weapons in violation of international law, including against its own citizens. This decision is based on the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Prevention Act of 1991.
Under this announcement, the United States has imposed a series of sanctions, including the termination of non-humanitarian foreign assistance, the suspension of arms sales and financing, the denial of any US government loans or financial support to Sudan, and a ban on the export of goods and technology sensitive to national security.
However, the US State Department has granted limited exemptions for US national security needs, particularly with regard to humanitarian assistance, civil aviation safety, and certain restricted-use exports.
The statement emphasized that these sanctions will remain in effect for at least one year, until further notice, and will be implemented by the competent authorities.
The Acting Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security determined on April 24, 2025, that the Government of Sudan had used chemical or biological weapons, in violation of international law, against its own citizens.
