The Sudanese Ministry of Health stated today that a meeting of the Federal Emergency Operations Center revealed an increase in cholera cases in several states, reaching 2,729 cases in a week, including 172 deaths. The Ministry noted that 90% of the new cases are in Khartoum State, particularly Karari, Omdurman, and Ombada, followed by North Kordofan, Sennar, Al-Jazirah, White Nile, and River Nile.

The meeting announced that the cumulative number of dengue fever cases has reached 12,886, including 20 deaths. Six states recorded 54 cumulative measles cases, including two deaths. It also noted that meningitis cases have been reported in six states, totaling 134 cases, including 12 deaths. It indicated that 73.9% of the cases are in Al-Jazirah State, while 91% of the hepatitis E cases are in Kassala State.

For its part, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has appealed to donors, the United Nations, and international NGOs to urgently scale up efforts to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, to curb the cholera outbreak.

MSF noted that cholera is spreading rapidly in Khartoum State. The organization confirmed that it is working closely with the Ministry of Health to strengthen its efforts and respond to the outbreak.

It explained that there are currently 13 cholera treatment units operating in Khartoum State, and MSF is supporting seven of them to ensure they are fully operational and able to expand their capacity according to needs.
