800 cholera cases in Khartoum, fears of the epidemic spreading to other states

A report issued today by the Ministry of Health in Khartoum State revealed the presence of 800 cholera cases in hospitals operating in the state. The ministrys media confirmed that 218 cases received treatment and were discharged from the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Preparatory Committee of the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate issued an urgent appeal warning of the cholera epidemic threatening the lives of Sudanese in seven states.

In its statement yesterday, the Syndicate stated that the spread of cholera represents an additional challenge to the health crisis in Sudan, given the exhausted health system already struggling to cope with high rates of malnutrition among children, the increasing number of war wounded, and the ongoing outbreak of preventable diseases.

It added that the health situation is facing a severe shortage of intravenous solutions and other medical supplies, as well as a shortage of medical personnel.

International health organizations, led by the World Health Organization, the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and others, have called for urgent intervention to support the efforts of the state ministries of health and grassroots efforts to control the epidemic before it spreads to other states and to avoid further loss of life.

Previously, Doctors Without Borders confirmed the reporting of thousands of suspected cholera cases in Sudan, noting that 500 cases were recorded in a single day in the capital, Khartoum, amid deteriorating health conditions. Volunteers posted photos of infected people lying on the ground and receiving intravenous fluids in the streets and courtyards of hospitals.
