On the side-lines of the Arab Summit, 3 organizations discuss peace in Sudan

A high-level consultative meeting was held today between the African Union Commission, the League of Arab States, and the United Nations to support peace in Sudan. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 34th Arab Summit in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
A joint statement issued after the meeting stated that this high-level consultative meeting, held between the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, aims to unify the efforts of their organizations in favor of peace and achieve a stronger and more coordinated international response to stop the fighting and violence in Sudan, alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people, ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid, and achieve a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.
In the joint statement, the three organizations reiterated their strong commitment to the sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity of Sudan, and to avoiding the collapse of Sudanese national institutions. They stated that their efforts should be based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the Jeddah Declaration, and relevant African Union and League of Arab States resolutions.
The joint statement emphasized the need to develop a coherent vision and approach to respond to the crisis in Sudan in a manner that relies on complementarity and comparative advantages, focusing on strategic action supported by active cooperation. It also emphasized the need to strengthen multilateral coherence through a high-level agreement on the formation of a broader grouping, to be developed and agreed upon with the participation of multilateral institutions that can provide political support and advance efforts, while ensuring coordination and complementarity with the mechanisms of member states.
During the meeting, participants agreed to take advantage of the opportunities of the upcoming summits of the United Nations General Assembly, the African Union, and the League of Arab States to reconvene at the level of heads of relevant multilateral organizations. This will maintain high-level engagement, assess developments in the situation in Sudan, and agree on the necessary steps to enhance the efficiency and coherence of their work.
