Complete darkness: Omdurman citizens fear water shortages

Moatinoon
Citizens in Omdurman expressed their fear of a recurrence of water shortages after the Rapid Support Forces targeted several electricity distribution stations with a drone yesterday, causing a power outage in the city.

An eyewitness from Omdurman told Citizens that the drone targeted the Markhiyat station, responsible for distributing electricity throughout the city, and also targeted the Nahda station in the northern countryside.

The Sudanese Electricity Company announced yesterday evening that a drone attack carried out by the Rapid Support Forces targeted two power generation stations, causing fires and power outages in the capital.

The company added in a statement: "Militia drones targeted the Markhiyat substation and a distribution station in Omdurman."

It added that the attack "led to a power outage throughout Khartoum, exacerbating the suffering of citizens and the disruption of services."

All service sectors were affected by the power outage. In a survey conducted by "Citizens" about the power outage in the city, Maryam said she was unable to undergo the necessary medical examinations for her fetus at the Balak Hospital, even though she had gone to the hospital at the scheduled times, due to the power outage while she was there.

Some citizens said that their greatest concern was the water shortage, a previous experience that forced them to fetch water from far from their homes. Water pumping and distribution stations operate on electricity.

Ali, from the northern countryside, indicated that the power outage would raise the cost of living and increase their suffering, especially since they rely on it for some jobs that will cease until power is restored.

Another said they would lose the ability to transfer money, especially given the cash liquidity crisis. They would also struggle to receive remittances, and some would exploit the current situation to make a living by charging phones and other services.
