The UN Secretary-Generals Personal Envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, said that the second anniversary of the outbreak of the war has passed, and we hoped that this anniversary would not come without ending the war. He added that a third anniversary of the war is unacceptable.
He added that he rejects the logic of managing the war as if it were a battle of attrition. He also said that the continued flow of weapons and fighters represents a major obstacle to a solution in Sudan, as it simply "feeds military illusions and prolongs the tragedy."
In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, he said, "Peace cannot be imposed, but rather made... and if the Sudanese do not make it, it will not come from abroad."
The UN envoy said that during his recent visit to Port Sudan, he met with the head of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and left the meeting with an "encouraging" impression. However, he did not hide the fact that there is still a long way to go. Regarding communication with the leadership of the Rapid Support Forces, he said that he is still waiting for a meeting to be arranged soon.
