Celebrities Supporting Sudan

The ongoing war has left Sudan particularly vulnerable, with an economic crisis, political instability and plummeting food insecurity. Currently, 9.3 million people in South Sudan require humanitarian aid, roughly 69% of the population. All the while, rising political and regional tensions could push the country into a larger conflict, dragging South Sudan into Sudan’s civil war as hundreds of thousands of people have fled from Sudan to South Sudan for safety. This increases the chance of violent disputes over land, housing and property. Here are some of the celebrities supporting Sudan at this difficult time.

Angelina Jolie
The Oscar winner and humanitarian recently attended a U.N. General Assembly meeting that she shared on her Instagram. The meeting highlighted a need to increase humanitarian aid in Sudan and the surrounding regions. The caption on her post read, “I recently returned from Chad, where I met Sudanese refugees who have escaped across the border. Due to relentless war and violence, Sudan is currently experiencing the largest displacement crisis in the world, with over 10 million people internally displaced and more than 2 million fleeing to neighboring countries.” Angelina Jolie does not post on social media often, but when she does, she uses her platform to support human rights across the world.

George Clooney
Hollywood A-lister George Clooney has campaigned relentlessly against the war in Sudan. Dating back to 2012, when he branded the Darfur conflict a “genocide,” he accused Khartoum of crimes against humanity. He set up the humanitarian group “Not On Our Watch” with peers Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle, raising over 9 million for the Darfur region. The actor has not been shy to call out “multinationals, Western tycoons and brokers” who have profited from South Sudan’s violent instability, claiming that it is a problem that affects us all.

Paloma Faith
Paloma Faith, among several celebrities, has signed an open letter to the Foreign Secretary calling for further action to stop the recent conflict in Sudan. It has been two years since the Sudan war started in Khartoum between rival forces, which has affected the country and surrounding regions, most prominently South Sudan, due to forced displacement. At least 8.2 million people have been displaced since the fighting broke out in April 2023. The letter, signed by famous creatives states: “For too long, this terrible war has gone on virtually forgotten. Enough is Enough.”

Celebrities supporting Sudan play a crucial role in raising global awareness and mobilizing support for the country’s ongoing struggles. Their platforms allow them to highlight the severe humanitarian crisis, the need for peace, and the importance of international solidarity. While their efforts are valuable in bringing attention to Sudan’s challenges, it is clear that sustained action from both the global community and government organizations is essential for lasting change.
