UN concerned about civilians fleeing violence in Blue Nile State
Moatinoon
The United Nations has expressed concern about the situation of civilians fleeing insecurity in Blue Nile State, southeastern Sudan, as well as the difficulty of humanitarian access to them.
Local authorities estimate that 4,000 displaced people from Ulu and other towns in the Bau area are heading toward Damazin, the state capital, about 230 kilometers away. UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said that approximately 600 people have arrived in the city so far and are staying at a site for displaced people.
During his daily press conference, Mr. Dujarric said that ongoing insecurity and bureaucratic restrictions have prevented UN humanitarian partners from reaching the affected areas. He added, "We reiterate our call for safe, sustained, and unhindered humanitarian access to all those in need."
Dujarric also reported new arrivals from South Sudan to other parts of Blue Nile State in recent weeks, "illustrating the growing complexity of the situation in the region."
