The Director of the Regional Office and Coordinator for the Situation in Sudan at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mamadou Diagne Balde, told CNBC Arabia that the agency was unable to provide more than 6.5% of the total aid requested this year, while it provided approximately 30% of the aid in 2024.
He said that 12 million Sudanese have been displaced internally and externally since the beginning of the conflict, noting that the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has exceeded 8 million, while 3.8 million Sudanese have fled to neighboring African countries such as Egypt, Chad, South Sudan, Uganda, Libya, and Ethiopia.
In the same context, the Director of the Regional Office and Coordinator for the Situation in Sudan at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed to CNBC Arabia that the volume of US aid in 2024 was significant, expressing his hope that it would continue this year, indicating the possibility of it being halted or reduced in the coming period, in line with the strategy pursued by President Donald Trump. The Director of the Regional Office and Coordinator for the Situation in Sudan at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called on all international donors, including countries, governments, agencies, associations, and organizations, to provide aid to the Sudanese people as soon as possible. He pointed out the seriousness of the current situation, especially with the spread of certain diseases and the cholera epidemic. He also noted that there are numerous obstacles preventing and hindering the delivery of aid to many cities within Sudan.
On the other hand, the Director of the Regional Office and Coordinator for the Situation in Sudan at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed that the agency launched a campaign targeting 6 billion in aid, but has so far raised only 1.8 billion.
