Herbs as an alternative to medicines in South Khartoum

Moatinoon
The South Belt Emergency Room in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, revealed a significant deterioration in the humanitarian and security conditions in the neighborhoods of southern Khartoum, indicating a severe shortage of medicines, which prompted dozens of patients to resort to using herbs as an alternative to medicines.

The room said that "the region is witnessing deteriorating humanitarian conditions that are getting worse day after day, as residents suffer from a stifling health crisis, a dangerous security breakdown, and a deterioration in livelihoods, which requires urgent intervention to save lives and alleviate the suffering of citizens."

A statement published by the room on its Facebook page revealed that health care has stopped after the only hospital, "Bashaer" Hospital, went out of service, stressing that most clinics were closed due to looting and vandalism, which deprived thousands of patients of receiving the necessary treatment.

Doctors Without Borders announced the suspension of its activities in "Bashaer" Hospital, which is the only medical facility that was operating in the South Belt area, in protest against the increasing violations committed by armed groups inside the hospital and endangering the lives of patients and health personnel.

The statement explained that the severe shortage of essential medicines, such as insulin and blood pressure medications, has put the lives of those suffering from chronic diseases at real risk, forcing some citizens to resort to alternative medicine and rely on herbs for treatment. The statement confirmed the spread of drug trade on the black market at exorbitant prices, making it impossible to obtain treatment, especially in the event of a lack of liquidity.

The South Belt Emergency Room explained that the region suffers from ongoing security chaos, as looting, arbitrary arrests, and forced displacement of families at gunpoint are repeated, which has further deteriorated living conditions.

The Rapid Support Forces control many areas in the South Belt, which include the neighborhoods of "Mayo, Enqaz, Azhari, Al-Salama, and other neighborhoods.
