UN Security Council: Parallel Government in Sudan Will Worsen the Conflict

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has expressed deep concern over the signing of a charter to establish a parallel governing authority in Sudan, warning that such actions "threaten to escalate the ongoing conflict, fragment the country, and worsen an already dire humanitarian crisis."

In a statement, UNSC members reaffirmed their strong commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, emphasizing that any unilateral actions undermining these principles "pose a threat to the stability of Sudan and the wider region."

The Council urged all parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities and engage in good-faith political dialogue and diplomatic efforts toward a permanent ceasefire.

Call for Ceasefire During Ramadan
The UNSC members welcomed calls from the African Union (AU) and UN Secretary-General António Guterres for an urgent ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan. They reiterated their appeal for all parties to honor their commitments under the Jeddah Declaration.

Additionally, the Council stressed the importance of an inclusive, transparent, and genuine national dialogue, leading to a free, fair, and democratically elected government after a civilian-led transitional period. This, they stated, is essential to achieving the Sudanese peoples aspirations for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future, in full accordance with the principles of national ownership.

Warning Against External Interference
The Security Council also urged all UN member states to refrain from external interference aimed at fueling conflict and instability. They called on the international community to support efforts toward lasting peace, uphold commitments under international law, and ensure the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions.
