UN and USA concern over formation of parallel government in Sudan
Moatinoon
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed his deep concern over the intention of the "Rapid Support Forces" and their allies to form a parallel government in areas under their control, according to what Guterres spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, announced on Monday.
Dujarric said: "This additional escalation in the conflict in Sudan increases the fragmentation of the country and threatens to deepen the crisis further."
The Rapid Support Forces and a number of civilian actors and armed groups allied with them signed a political charter expressing their intention to establish a governing authority in areas under their control.
Dujarric added: "Preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan remains essential to reaching a sustainable solution to the conflict and ensuring long-term stability for the country and the wider region."
He pointed out that the Secretary-General condemns the ongoing violence against civilians across Sudan by parties to the conflict, including ethnically motivated attacks. He explained that Sudanese women, children and men are the most affected by the ongoing armed conflict.
For his part, a US State Department spokesman told Al-Sharq News Channel that the attempts of the Rapid Support Forces and its allies to form a government in areas under their control will not help bring peace and security to Sudan.
He added that the step of forming a government in areas under the control of the Rapid Support Forces could lead to the risk of dividing Sudan based on a de facto situation.
