According to Ekathimerini web site, a 20-year-old Sudanese national has been arrested after authorities said survivors of the deadly shipwreck off Samos identified him as their smuggler.
Eight people, including two women and six children, died when a small boat carrying an unspecified number of migrants sank off the coast of the island. A search operation has continued for a second day, involving vessels and divers.
The coast guard said 36 survivors from the incident were found on a rocky shoreline, while three others were rescued earlier. In total, 39 people – 15 men, 7 women and 16 minors – were rescued and taken to the island’s reception and identification center. Most of the survivors are said to be Afghan nationals, with three Egyptian nationals and two Sudanese nationals among them.
