Possible collapse of Jebel Aulia Dam in Sudan

Moatinoon
A report warned of the possible collapse of Jebel Aulia Dam in the southern Khartoum area on the White Nile, as a result of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.

The report, published by the Netherlands IHE Delft Institute of Water Education in partnership with the United Nations Water and Development Programme, sounded the alarm that the Jebel Aulia Dam had collapsed due to attacks carried out in clashes between the parties to the war in the Sudan that had damaged the dam.

The report noted that maintenance workers had left and had to flee the area, while flood gates remained static, posing a threat to the dams structure, threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions of people dependent on fishing, agriculture, energy and drinking water.

The researchers of the Netherlands Institute examined the potential impact of ongoing armed conflict on the dams technical operations and the risks of the oceans involved, and noted that water infrastructure was often depleted in war.
