The Preparatory Committee of the Sudan Doctors Union issued a report today, during which it monitored the situation of displaced persons from villages and towns in eastern Jazeera State to the city of Qadarif and surrounding areas.

The report monitored the displacement of 8500 families, some 50 thousand, from villages and towns in eastern Island State to the city of Al-Qadarif, which were distributed 100 a shelter centre. Women accounted for 65 per cent of displaced persons, which added to the challenges in meeting their needs, especially with increasing instances of violence and weak protection.

The report stated that displaced persons were not monitored in some 16 villages around Faw City and Shawk locality, in addition to villages under the local Shawk administration.

The Commission said that there were major problems facing displaced persons in shelters, namely basic services infrastructure. It cautioned against inadequate bathrooms within the centres, as well as the lack of stable water sources and insufficient clean drinking water, which increased the risk of infectious diseases. She noted the existence of cholera health isolation centres with the support of organizations, which had contributed to the treatment of many cases.

On the health situation, the report monitored the prevalence of diseases such as cholera, aquatic diarrhoea, malaria, the increase in daily infections and the spread of flies significantly, as well as the total absence of psychological support for displaced persons. In addition, there are small health centres operating with medical personnel, as well as a mobile clinic serving shelters at least two days a week.

The report of the Preparatory Committee for the Sudan Doctors Union revealed that there were no clear mechanisms for dealing with cases of rape, which exacerbated the suffering of displaced persons, especially women. The absence of safe centres dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual violence or providing the necessary psychosocial care was noted.

The Committee recommended that the infrastructure of shelters be improved in order to provide better services to displaced persons and strengthen health care. It called on international organizations to intervene immediately to close the food gap and to strengthen coordination between government agencies and local and international organizations to ensure an effective and sustainable response.
