Local volunteers in Khartoum North have announced that 150 community kitchens in one of the city’s localities have ceased operations due to a lack of support, warning that many residents are now facing a real risk of famine.
The East Nile Emergency Response Room stated in a report on Sunday that the East Nile locality is experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. With the spread of diseases and increasing cases of malnutrition among children and the elderly, the situation has become catastrophic.
The group has called on philanthropists, as well as local and international organizations, to provide assistance to help restart these community kitchens.
Many volunteer groups supply food through open kitchens that serve tens of thousands of residents in Khartoum State, supported by donors and the World Food Programme. The East Nile locality is one of the seven localities that comprise Khartoum State and covers one-third of the state’s area.
The statement added that these kitchens were a lifeline for thousands of families who relied on them for their daily meals amid harsh economic conditions, worsened by the ongoing war and the loss of livelihoods and all means of sustenance.
