The Preparatory Committee of the Sudan Doctors Union said that areas of the east of the island in the Sudan face a worsening humanitarian disaster, as a result of violent and persistent attacks by the Rapid Support Forces. The region was experiencing a systematic campaign of retaliation against civilians, resulting in the death, deportation and forced displacement of thousands.
According to the committee, more than 70 citizens were killed and, in a statement yesterday, warned of the worsening health situation in the city of Al-Hilaliyah and nearby areas after the outbreak of water diarrhoea.
Al-Sabbagh Rural Hospital, which was the main medical care provider for displaced persons, was suffering from a massive outpouring of over-capacity patients and a severe shortage of medical personnel, medicines and basic medical supplies.
In the same vein, the Committees statement revealed the suffering experienced by displaced persons from the eastern parts of the islands State, with displaced persons living in the new city of Halfa and its villages in tragic conditions, where they slept in the open without shelter or coverings and lacked clean drinking water sources. Water diarrhoea cases had increased to 158, four of which had died, in the near absence of government and humanitarian organizations.
The Sudan Doctors Union Pre-Commission renewed its urgent demands for international organizations to assist immediately in addressing this humanitarian tragedy. She appealed to relevant stakeholders to take action to provide protection to civilians and ensure humanitarian access to those affected.
It also appealed to medical personnel in stable towns adjacent to areas of displacement, such as Kassala, Qadarif and Port Sudan, to provide medical and psychological support to displaced persons, especially women, children and victims of sexual violations.
