US Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Periello will travel to Nairobi and Addis Ababa, starting on September 29, to continue diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Sudan and reach out to Sudanese refugees and civilian leaders to restore the path to an inclusive democratic future.

The Special Envoy would meet key officials, including from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), according to an American Foreign Affairs statement. He will also meet with leaders of Sudanese civil society and international non-governmental organizations focused on humanitarian support and the protection of civilians.

The Special Envoy will continue his efforts to advance a comprehensive process of Sudans transition to civilian rule. These consultations will also benefit our ongoing diplomatic efforts to pressure the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to agree to humanitarian stops leading to a comprehensive cessation of hostilities and expanded humanitarian access.

The United States stood with the Sudanese people and their aspirations for peace, freedom and justice. The Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces called for an end to violence, the removal of all barriers to humanitarian needs, famine conditions, gender-based violence and respect for the laws of war in relation to the protection of civilians.
