U.S. President Joe Biden has called on the world to stop arming the warring factions in Sudan.
In his speech before the United Nations General Assembly today, where he addressed various issues, Biden stated, “The world must stop arming the two generals and speak with one voice to tell them: ‘Stop tearing your country apart. Stop blocking aid from reaching the Sudanese people. End this war now,’” according to the United Nations.
Biden emphasized that the “bloody civil war” in the country has triggered one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. He noted that the U.S. has led diplomatic efforts with its partners to “try to silence the guns and prevent widespread famine.”
In a statement released by the White House last week, Biden urged both sides of the Sudan conflict to resume negotiations aimed at ending the war, which has been ongoing since April 2023. The conflict has left tens of thousands dead and has pushed the country to the brink of famine.
“I call on both warring parties to withdraw their forces, allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need, and re-engage in negotiations to end this war,” Biden said.
In his statement, Biden also expressed regret over the siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of El Fasher, which has recently escalated into an "intense attack." He highlighted the atrocities civilians have endured since the conflict began.
