Volunteers in the capital Khartoum have reported a widespread outbreak of dengue fever. The Emergency Room in South Al-Hizam stated that they have observed an alarming rise in dengue fever cases in the South Al-Hizam area, south of Khartoum, including among the staff at Bashair Hospital, leading to the shutdown of most of its departments.
In a statement posted on their page, they clarified that 95% of the staff at Bashair Hospital had been affected by dengue fever, with 51 new cases recorded last week alone.
The Emergency Room recorded 100 cases among both residents and hospital staff within the same week, and there have been reports of deaths in neighborhoods that have not yet been officially documented.
The Emergency Room also noted that the outbreak among hospital staff led to the closure of most of the hospital’s departments, including the laboratory, operating room, and blood bank. As of yesterday afternoon, the emergency department was also shut down.
This situation comes amid rising drug prices and shortages, with the cost of a single IV drip reaching between 4,000 and 5,000 SDG, adding further strain on both citizens and the hospital.
