The U.S. Envoy to Sudan: We Are in Contact with Al-Burhan to Achieve a Civil Democratic Transition

The U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, stated that the United States remains committed to achieving a civil democratic transition in Sudan. He mentioned that they are continuing discussions with General Al-Burhan and his team in the Sovereignty Council regarding these objectives.

Perriello pointed out that his country recognizes that there are voices within the Sudanese military calling for the army to engage in negotiations, while other voices oppose it. In an interview with the "Daq Jars" platform on "X" today, he explained that the negative forces preventing the military from entering negotiations are elements from the National Congress Party.

Perriello added that negative actors from the Bashir regime and the National Congress Party are working to prolong the war in Sudan, emphasizing that the United States is not only aiming for a cessation of hostilities but also for the restoration of civilian democratic governance in Sudan.

He further mentioned that both the army and the Rapid Support Forces have failed to reach an agreement and deliver humanitarian aid. He noted that they agree with the Sudanese military on the need to remove military presence from homes and hospitals, expressing hope that this could have been implemented during the Geneva negotiations, had the army not withdrawn, thus missing a good opportunity to implement the outcomes of the Jeddah platform.

He reaffirmed their commitment to the Jeddah platform outcomes, saying, "It is an important part of our discussions, and we will push forward to implement these outcomes."

Perriello concluded by saying, "We are working with the Sudanese to end the war and restore the civil democratic path. We know that the Sudanese do not want the army or the Rapid Support Forces to seize power, nor do they want the return of the National Congress Party."
