Volunteers in South Khartoum have reported that 20 people died, and 4,000 others were infected with malaria last week.
In a statement, the Ganoub Alhizam Emergency Room in the capital Khartoum noted that the rate of malaria infections has risen alarmingly among civilians. It stated that Bashair Hospital and health centers managed by the South Belt Emergency Room in the Mayo and Jad Hussein areas received approximately 4,000 malaria cases last week, with a death toll of 20 among those who sought treatment.
The outbreak has been attributed to environmental pollution and the increase in stagnant water due to the lack of proper drainage for rainwater, leading to a surge in mosquito breeding, the vector for malaria. Additionally, the Ganoub Alhizam area is suffering from a shortage of life-saving drugs, particularly malaria treatments, with the price of a single dose of Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) reaching 10,000 Sudanese pounds in some pharmacies.
