UNICEF reported that at least 30 children were killed or injured when several shells fell on the city of Sennar.
In a statement issued yesterday, the organization said, "These horrifying attacks continue to cause immense harm and suffering to children, as well as widespread damage and destruction to the essential infrastructure that children rely on. Last year, explosive weapons were responsible for more than half of the documented cases in which children were killed or injured in Sudan, as reported by the United Nations."
UNICEF called for an end to violence against children, stating, "The wave of atrocities committed against children in Sudan must stop."
The statement continued, "Violence against children and attacks on civilian infrastructure must end. UNICEF reiterates its call for all parties to fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law and take all possible precautions to protect children."
The organization added, "In 2023, Sudan witnessed the highest number of documented grave violations against children in over a decade. This included an estimated 72 percent of violations involving the killing and maiming of children, followed by child recruitment and use by armed groups, as well as sexual violence."
"In 2024, the United Nations continues to receive shocking reports of children being killed or injured due to heavy airstrikes, artillery use, and small arms fire. Girls have particularly borne a heavy burden, facing horrific risks to their safety, including rape and other forms of sexual violence."
