The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced on Wednesday an additional 2 million in humanitarian aid to Chad in response to widespread flooding that has impacted the country.
USAID noted that Chad is facing simultaneous crises in different parts of the country, including ongoing food insecurity, armed group activity, and continued needs of over 1.2 million refugees who have sought safety in Chad. This includes more than 636,000 Sudanese refugees and 201,000 Chadian returnees from Sudan, with significant humanitarian needs among the most vulnerable populations.
The agency stated that the additional funding will help provide emergency shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene support in the hardest-hit communities to ensure peoples safety and health. It will also support the UN World Food Programme in delivering urgent food assistance to those in dire need.
Since late July, heavy rains and subsequent flooding in Chad have affected nearly 1.5 million people across the country, killing at least 341 people, destroying livelihoods, and worsening pre-existing humanitarian needs.
