EU Supports Expanding the Arms Embargo to Cover All of Sudan

Moatinoon
The European Union has affirmed its support for the recommendation of the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission to extend and expand the UN-imposed arms embargo on Darfur to cover all of Sudan. In a statement yesterday, the EU stated that any external support for the warring parties would only fuel the conflict and pose a threat to the regions stability.

The European Union praised the work of the UN Independent Fact-Finding Mission in Sudan, which recently issued a report on the dire situation in the country, including the indiscriminate and direct targeting of civilians.

The EU stated that the report provides further evidence that the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces, and their affiliated militias are responsible for widespread violations of human rights and international law. Many of these violations amount to international crimes, and there are reasonable grounds to believe that war crimes have been committed.

The European Union emphasized its efforts, in cooperation with international mechanisms, to ensure that all those responsible are identified and held accountable for the atrocities they have committed and continue to commit. There can be no impunity. The EU expects the International Criminal Courts prosecutor to issue arrest warrants soon, noting that it has already imposed sanctions on some officials and will continue to do so.

The European Union reiterated its strong call for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, as well as the establishment of independent monitoring and verification mechanisms to enforce it. The EU also reaffirmed its unwavering support and solidarity with the Sudanese people during this critical time.
