The Health Emergency Room in Kufra, located in southeastern Libya, held an urgent meeting last Sunday, attended by the Mayor of the municipality, Abdulrahman Agoub, the Head of the Health Emergency Room at the Ministry of Health, Ismail Al-Eidha, the Director of Health Services in Kufra, and the directors of the health centers in the municipality. The meeting was convened to discuss the health situation in the city, the spread of certain diseases among Sudanese refugees, and to coordinate the necessary actions with the relevant authorities. The municipality did not provide details regarding the types of diseases or their extent.
Last Tuesday, the Community Development Department of the Kufra Municipal Council announced that it had successfully established an electronic system for issuing special cards to Sudanese refugees to organize the distribution of aid, in collaboration with the Kufra branch of the Red Crescent and the Sudanese community coordinator. The municipality has been struggling with the absence of a formal refugee registration system and has relied on distribution lists for the humanitarian aid it receives.
Last week, the Mayor of Kufra met with representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to discuss the agencies efforts in providing support to the Kufra municipality to serve both citizens and refugees, as a significant portion of the local population also requires assistance.
UNICEF and UNDP have implemented several projects in Kufra municipality, including those focused on children and youth, drilling water wells, maintenance, and more.
