The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that floods and torrents in Sudan have triggered a new wave of displacement.

According to the organizations Displacement Tracking Matrix, which monitors flood-induced displacement across Sudan, heavy rains in 60 locations throughout the country between June 1 and August 12 have led to a new displacement wave. This forced 117,835 individuals (23,567 households) in 12 different states across Sudan to flee their homes.

The report added that in just one week, from August 6 to 12, 2024, floods and torrents affected 30 locations, displacing an estimated 96,465 individuals (19,293 households) and partially or completely destroying nearly 32,611 buildings.

The states with the highest number of displaced persons include River Nile (57,560), West Darfur (20,025), North Darfur (12,925), Northern State (12,245), and Al Jazira (4,780). IOMs field teams observed that heavy rains and flooding in the Abu Hamad area of River Nile State alone displaced approximately 57,400 individuals (11,480 households).
