Youth Network Warns of the Impact of Floods and Rains in Red Sea State

The Youth Network for Civil Monitoring has called on humanitarian aid organizations to assist citizens and displaced people affected by the floods and rains in Red Sea State and across Sudan.
Heavy rains and strong winds have caused widespread chaos in the state, leading to building collapses and the toppling of electric poles, resulting in the loss of lives.
A report from the network indicated that floods and torrential rains swept through Red Sea State in eastern Sudan, with continuous rainfall lasting from August 4th to 6th, 2024. The severe weather has led to significant loss of life and property, disrupting transportation and trade.
The network reported that the floods have cut off the road between Red Sea State and Nile River State, as well as the northern road of Red Sea State connecting Port Sudan to its northern localities (Halaib and Jebeit Al-Ma’aden localities). This road is a vital trade route leading to localities near the Egyptian border, including the Sudanese locality of Halaib.
The floods also submerged several vehicles, both public and private, and caused homes to collapse in villages within Haya and Port Sudan localities, leading to the displacement of many families to relatively safe and dry areas. A large number of displaced people in the state have been severely affected.
Several villages in the "Arbaat" area of Port Sudan locality remain surrounded by water, making it impossible to deliver humanitarian aid. In Shideiab village within Haya locality, residents face harsh conditions after floodwaters inundated populated areas.
The network’s report also warned of potential environmental pollution and a health disaster due to the flooding of mining equipment and facilities, including toxic materials like mercury, in the well-known mining market "Souq Al-Ansari" in Jebeit, Red Sea State.
