IOM: Sudan on the Brink of Collapse

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that the humanitarian situation in Sudan has reached a "catastrophic breaking point." It warned of worsening conditions, compounded by famine and floods, which have introduced new challenges for millions struggling to adapt to the worlds largest displacement crisis.

In a statement released today, the IOM confirmed that internal displacement is on the rise, reaching over 10.7 million people, many of whom have been displaced twice or more. It noted that over 700,000 people were displaced in the past month alone, 63% of whom were originally from other states, predominantly from Khartoum. Additionally, floods have rendered more than 20,000 people homeless since June across 11 of Sudans 18 states, while also destroying vital infrastructure.

The organization highlighted that nearly all internally displaced persons (97%) across Sudan are in areas experiencing severe levels of food insecurity or worse.

Osman Belbeisi, IOMs Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, stated, "These conditions will persist and worsen if the conflict and restrictions on humanitarian access continue."

He warned of potential thousands of deaths, saying, "Without an immediate, large-scale, and coordinated global response, we risk witnessing tens of thousands of preventable deaths in the coming months. We are on the brink of collapse, at a catastrophic breaking point."

The IOM added that the humanitarian and protection conditions in Sudan are among the worst globally. The ongoing conflict is marked by horrific levels of rights violations, ethnic targeting, massacres against civilian populations, and gender-based violence.

The organization called on the international community to provide urgent funding to scale up the response and reach those still in dire need of food, shelter, water, health services, and specialized protection.
