The General Coordination of Camps for the Displaced and Refugees in Darfur has accused the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) of inaction and undermining efforts to execute arrest warrants for individuals wanted by international justice.
In a statement issued today, the Coordination emphasized that the Prosecutor must work towards achieving justice and providing redress to victims, stressing the need for the surrender of all those wanted by international justice, foremost among them former President Omar al-Bashir, his Defense Minister, and Ahmed Mohamed Haroun.
The statement preceded a briefing by ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, which he is scheduled to present before the United Nations Security Council on Monday regarding the situation in Darfur.
The Coordination called on Khan to resign to make way for others who are willing and able to stand by the victims of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and war crimes committed by the Sudanese government in Darfur.
The Darfur Bar Association had previously called on the Security Council to consider the resignation of the ICC Prosecutor, accusing him of undermining efforts to execute arrest warrants for those wanted by the ICC.
Prosecutor Karim Khan had previously expressed doubt about the sufficiency of the evidence in the case being pursued by the ICC prosecution, specifically regarding Darfur. The evidence was presented by the ICCs Office of the Prosecutor and led the ICCs Pre-Trial Chamber I to issue arrest warrants for those wanted by the court.
