Omdurman Complains of Rising Prices
Omdurman: Rami Mokhar
A tour conducted by Citizens revealed a noticeable increase in market prices in the city of Omdurman. Some residents noted that the past two months have witnessed a significant rise in commodity prices. Muhammad Mirghani (who lives in Al-Thawra) told Citizens: "The price of a kilogram of lentils reached 3,000 Sudanese pounds, 4,000 for beans, while the price of a kilogram of meat ranges between 12,000 to 15,000 pounds. A kilogram of Seega flour costs 2,500 pounds, the cheapest vegetable salad is 3,000 pounds, and a quarter kilogram of onions costs 3,000 pounds."
It is noted that vegetables come to the city of Al-Thawra from the areas of Al-Jarafa, Shendi, and Al-Jazira Salanj. Mirghani indicated that the markets in Omdurman and the Al-Shuhada area have not yet started operations, explaining that there are three main markets in the area: the Khalifa Market, Market (17), and Sabrin Market, which traders from the Omdurman Market, the Popular Market, and Libya Market flocked to after the outbreak of the war. He added: "There is a significant rise in prices, even in real estate, rents, and transportation," noting that there is an abundance of goods, but citizens have a problem with cash liquidity. He added, "Most of the areas residents do not have a fixed income, and a two-day supply for one person costs between 15,000 to 20,000 pounds."
Faris Muhammad (who lives in southern Omdurman) pointed out that the residents of the rural southern area in Omdurman, where the Rapid Support Forces are widespread, suffer from significant increases in the prices of basic commodities, along with their scarcity. He said, "The prices of food and drinks have increased significantly, and the goods are scarce. Previously, goods used to come from the city of Rabak in White Nile State, but after the closure of the Sennar road, the situation became difficult, and goods now come from Al-Dabba. The price of a bag of sugar reached 150,000 pounds, a bag of flour 60,000 pounds, and a bag of grain is about 150,000 pounds."
Citizens pointed out that the rise in fuel prices has increased the suffering of the states residents. The tour revealed that a gallon of gasoline in the black market reached 24,000 pounds due to the non-functioning of fuel stations.
