Mamadou Dian Balde, the Regional Refugee Coordinator for the Sudan situation and Director of UNHCRs Regional Bureau for East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes, stated in todays announcement, "Warning signs have been present for months, but we now have the unfortunate confirmation of famine in North Darfur, Sudan."
He added, "Humanitarian workers must be able to reach those in need to provide life-saving assistance. International donors must also intensify their support to address the ongoing issue of funding shortages for this humanitarian crisis and others. Solidarity with the affected individuals and communities is crucial, as the Sudanese people have suffered enough."
