10 Killed, Including Children, in Shelling of El-Obeid, Sudan

Ten people, including seven children, were killed in the city of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State in southern Sudan, after shelling hit a house in the city center, a medical source told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

According to an eyewitness, the strike struck a home in the heart of the North Kordofan capital, which is under army control and has been under attempted siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for months. Both the medical source and the eyewitness spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity.

Since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023 between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, tens of thousands have been killed and millions displaced. The fighting has pushed the country toward hunger and mass displacement, in a humanitarian crisis the United Nations has described as “the worst in the world.”

El-Obeid lies about 400 kilometers southwest of Khartoum and hosts an airport. It is also a strategic crossroads linking the capital to the Darfur region in western Sudan.

After consolidating control over large parts of Darfur, the RSF moved to expand its influence into the Kordofan region, tightening its siege on cities held by the army.

Hundreds of thousands of residents in the area face the threat of famine amid disrupted aid delivery and ongoing fighting on multiple fronts.

Last year, the army managed to break an RSF-imposed siege on El-Obeid, but the forces have since renewed efforts to encircle the city and tighten the blockade.

On Sunday, El-Obeid also experienced a power outage following drone strikes that targeted the electricity station, according to an announcement by the Sudan Electricity Company.
