IOM: 2,615 Displaced from Two Sudanese States in Two Days

Moatinoon – Agencies
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Tuesday that 2,615 people were displaced from South and North Kordofan states in southern Sudan over the past two days due to “insecurity,” amid intense fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the area.

The announcement came in the organization’s displacement updates for Sunday and Monday, reporting movements from the cities of Kadugli and Al-Dilling and the town of Dallami in South Kordofan, as well as from the village of Al-Shoul in North Kordofan.

Kadugli and Al-Dilling have been under siege imposed by the RSF and its allied Sudan People’s Liberation Movement since the early months of the war more than two years ago.

The three states of the Kordofan region have witnessed fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF for several weeks, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands in recent times.

On Tuesday, the organization said its field teams estimated that 1,475 people were displaced from Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, on 21 and 22 December due to the “worsening security situation.”

It added that 180 people were displaced from Al-Dilling on 22 December, while 60 others fled the town of Dallami on 21 December, also as a result of insecurity.

The IOM noted that the displaced persons moved to various locations across South Kordofan, North Kordofan, and White Nile states.

It further stated: “Nine hundred people were displaced from the village of Al-Shoul in Bara locality, North Kordofan, to various sites in and around the locality on 21 December due to escalating insecurity.”

The organization said the security situation “remains highly tense and volatile,” stressing that it “will continue to closely monitor developments.”

On 18 December, the IOM announced that the number of displaced people across the three Kordofan states had reached 50,445 during the period from 26 October to 17 December.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate as a result of the war between the army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023 over disagreements regarding the integration of the latter into the military institution. The conflict has caused the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of 13 million people.
