The head of Bangladesh’s interim government announced on Saturday that six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and eight others wounded in what he described as a “drone attack carried out by terrorists” on a United Nations base in Abyei, South Sudan.

In a statement, Muhammad Yunus expressed his shock over the incident, saying: “The United Nations has been requested to take urgent measures to ensure the highest level of medical care and necessary assistance for the injured peacekeepers.”

According to Reuters, the Bangladeshi army announced that at least six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and eight others injured in an attack targeting a UN base in Abyei, Sudan.

In its statement, the army said: “The situation in the area remains unstable, and clashes with terrorists are ongoing,” stressing that authorities are making every effort to provide medical treatment and conduct rescue operations for the wounded.

Meanwhile, a medical source told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that an airstrike targeted a UN facility in the Kordofan region of South Sudan, killing at least six people.

Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, expressed his deep concern and profound sorrow over the bloody attack on a UN peacekeeping base in the Abyei region of Sudan, which resulted in the deaths of Bangladeshi soldiers and injuries to eight others, including three female soldiers.

In a post on his official Facebook page on Saturday, Rahman said he felt “deep sorrow and great pain” over the tragic incident.

He added: “Our brave soldiers, who sacrificed their lives while serving under the United Nations flag to protect global peace, are a great source of pride for our nation. Their sacrifices will remain immortal in Bangladesh’s memory.”

Eyewitnesses told AFP that the victims of the attack on Kadugli, the besieged capital of South Kordofan state, were UN personnel.

Witnesses also reported that a drone struck a UN building.

Bangladesh is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, and its forces have long been deployed in Abyei, a volatile region disputed between Sudan and South Sudan.

The Rapid Support Forces have been besieging Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state—where famine was declared in early November—for a year and a half.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) was deployed in 2011. The oil-rich Abyei Administrative Area is jointly administered by Sudan and South Sudan, both of which claim sovereignty over it and have been locked in a protracted conflict. The mission’s mandate was renewed last month.
