A human rights group and a medical organization reported that the city of Dilling, in South Kordofan State, came under artillery shelling on Thursday morning, targeting residential neighborhoods and a hospital. The attack resulted in six deaths and twelve injuries, in addition to partial destruction of Dilling Teaching Hospital and its main facilities.

In a statement released on Friday, the Emergency Lawyers Group said that one of the shells landed directly inside the hospital, causing severe damage to several medical departments. The group noted that the city has been under a suffocating siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North faction led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, who are reportedly allied. The siege has worsened the suffering of civilians and put their lives at serious risk.

The Emergency Lawyers emphasized that indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and targeting medical facilities constitute war crimes and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, which strictly prohibits attacks on civilians and healthcare centers under any circumstances.

Meanwhile, the Preliminary Committee of the Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate said in a statement on Thursday that the shelling, carried out by the RSF, resulted in a large number of civilian casualties, including critical cases. The attack also destroyed the radiology and imaging department at Dilling Teaching Hospital, effectively disabling one of the region’s most vital healthcare facilities.

The syndicate added that the shelling occurred amid a severe humanitarian crisis in the city, marked by acute shortages of medical supplies and life-saving medicines. It stressed that attacks on hospitals and healthcare workers represent a complete war crime and a clear breach of international humanitarian law.

Both the Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate and Emergency Lawyers called for an immediate end to the random shelling, lifting of the siege on Dilling, and protection of medical facilities and staff. They urged the international community to intervene urgently to deliver medical and humanitarian aid and to hold accountable those responsible for these violations under international law.
