ICRC President Urges World Leaders to Act to Stop Indiscriminate Killings in Sudan

The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, has urged world leaders to take immediate action to end the indiscriminate killings and grave violations of the laws of war, warning of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe in El Fasher and other parts of Sudan.

In a statement, Spoljaric said the world is “standing by while civilians in Sudan endure unimaginable horror,” noting that the ICRC has repeatedly called on all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law, yet violations persist amid total impunity.

She explained that civilians are facing widespread sexual violence and deliberate destruction of vital infrastructure, while hospitals have been turned into “places of death and devastation.” She reaffirmed the ICRC’s call to end attacks on humanitarian and medical workers, following the killing of five Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers this week in North Kordofan.

“Nothing can justify the blatant violations of international humanitarian law in Sudan,” Spoljaric said, stressing that “no patient should be killed in a hospital, and no civilian should be targeted while fleeing their home.”

Addressing world leaders directly, she added: “The world cannot remain silent while civilians are stripped of their dignity and safety, and while the very rules designed to protect them are violated.” Spoljaric called for decisive political action to ensure that all parties to the conflict return to compliance with the laws of war.
