The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced the loss of 18 people after a wooden boat capsized off the coast of Sorman, Libya, on Tuesday, only a few hours after departing from Zawiya, due to rough sea waves.

According to the IOM, 64 people were rescued and brought safely to shore, while 18 others lost their lives. Among the survivors were 29 Sudanese men, one Sudanese woman, and one Sudanese child, along with 18 men from Bangladesh, 12 Pakistanis, and three Somalis. No information has yet been released about the nationalities of those who died.

The Central Mediterranean route remains one of the deadliest migration corridors in the world. The IOM’s Missing Migrants Project has recorded 1,046 deaths and disappearances since the beginning of 2025, including 527 off the Libyan coast.
