The Quartet Mechanism, which includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, is scheduled to hold a meeting later in October to assess recent developments in the Sudanese peace process.
Mossad Paulos, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for African Affairs, said in press statements that Washington had engaged with several partners on the humanitarian situation in Sudan on the sidelines of the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, noting that the meeting between President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi also discussed the Sudanese crisis.
Meanwhile, talks held today in Cairo between President El-Sisi and Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, during the latter’s visit to Egypt, focused on developments on the ground in Sudan and on international and regional efforts aimed at ending the war and achieving stability.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of the Quartet Mechanism as a main framework for resolving the Sudanese crisis, expressing hope that the upcoming Quartet meeting in Washington this October would produce tangible results that help end the war and reach a comprehensive political settlement.
In a related development, the European Union announced the commencement of duties by Ambassador Wolfram Vetter as Chargé d’Affaires and Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Sudan, marking the official return of the EU mission after its absence from Khartoum due to the ongoing war.
Ambassador Vetter stated in a message marking the occasion:
“I am honored to take on my duties representing the European Union to the Republic of Sudan from Cairo during this unfortunate period of war and ongoing humanitarian crisis. We will continue working to maintain and strengthen the strong relationship between Sudan and the European Union, and to ensure that the Sudanese people are not forgotten in these difficult times.”
He reaffirmed the EU’s commitment and that of its partners to support efforts aimed at ending the war, achieving a permanent ceasefire, and advancing humanitarian and development projects in the fields of food security, education, health, capacity-building, and climate action.
Vetter also noted that the European Union views Sudan as a nation rich in resources and cultural diversity, with a strategic geopolitical position on the Red Sea and at the heart of Africa, reiterating Europe’s steadfast commitment to the people of Sudan.
