Three people were killed today after gunmen opened fire inside Atbara Teaching Hospital, according to eyewitnesses.
A witness told Mowatanoon that a dispute broke out between local citizens and armed men belonging to the joint forces of Darfuri rebel movements inside the hospital premises.
The “joint forces” consist of fighters from various Darfur armed factions that previously fought against the Sudanese army but are now allied with it in its ongoing war against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
A local activist reported that members of the joint forces stormed the women’s and maternity ward at Atbara Hospital. When staff objected and told them the ward was reserved for women only, an argument erupted between the soldiers and a hospital employee.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the joint force members opened fire, killing three people instantly and wounding others who were later transferred to the intensive care unit.
In a similar incident earlier, doctors at Bashair Hospital in southern Khartoum suspended work after members of the joint forces threatened to blow up the facility in protest over the death of some of their wounded comrades.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported that two armed men entered the emergency room at Bashair Hospital — which the organization supports — and threatened the medical staff, forcing them to evacuate the ward.
