The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced that Japan has contributed 400 million Japanese yen (approximately US2.7 million) to support school meal programmes in Sudan.
In a statement issued on Monday, Laurent Bukera, WFP’s Country Director and Representative in Sudan, said the contribution comes “at a critical time as schools reopen,” and will help encourage the most vulnerable children to return to school and improve attendance amid the ongoing war that has triggered the world’s largest hunger crisis.
Mizuchi Kentaro, Chargé d’Affaires of Japan to Sudan, noted that school meals are designed to address the severe loss faced by children deprived of education, by providing food in exchange for learning.
This contribution represents about 13% of the total funding required for WFP’s school meals programme in Sudan over the next six months.
