Sudan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has issued an urgent warning about expected floods that may hit seven states in the coming days.
In a statement, the ministry urged citizens to exercise the utmost caution, especially in low-lying areas and those near waterways.
The ministry said the states at risk include: Khartoum, Gezira, White Nile, Blue Nile, Sennar, River Nile, and Northern State.
According to the Early Warning Unit, the alert is linked to increased water inflows from the Blue Nile, which could inundate fields and valleys, wash away crops and fodder, and threaten livestock in low-lying areas.
The unit also warned that properties and documents could be damaged by water seepage, and noted that contact between floodwaters and power lines poses a real risk of electrocution.
Authorities urged citizens to avoid low-lying areas and water-covered roads, and to store essential documents and materials in waterproof containers. They also stressed the importance of moving crops and fodder to higher ground and activating community cooperation mechanisms to assist vulnerable groups, including the elderly, people with disabilities, and children.
The Early Warning Unit confirmed that the alert could be updated at any time depending on water levels and flow rates, calling on citizens to follow official weather bulletins and approved communication channels for the latest updates.
It is noteworthy that on Tuesday, the Ministry of Irrigation had already issued a notice warning residents along both banks of the Blue Nile—from Roseries to Khartoum—as well as along the Nile River from Khartoum to the city of Merowe, of rising water levels due to increased inflows, urging precautionary measures.
