Rights Center: Rainwater May Have Swept Away Thousands of Victims in Jebel Marra Landslide

In a new update on the landslide that struck Tarsin village in Jebel Marra at the end of August, the African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) warned that rainwater may have swept away thousands of victims. This, it said, could explain the relatively low number of bodies recovered so far compared to the scale of the disaster.

In a statement on Monday, ACJPS stressed that the tragic incident underscores the urgent need to establish early warning systems in the Jebel Marra region to prevent similar catastrophes in the future.

The center praised the swift response and fruitful cooperation shown by numerous rescue teams and humanitarian groups. It noted that the joint effort—between civilian authorities affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Movement (Abdel Wahid al-Nur faction), local communities, and both international and local relief organizations—serves as a positive model to be emulated.

The landslide, triggered by heavy rains on 31 August 2025, claimed hundreds of lives in the Jebel Marra area of western Sudan. The affected site lies in territory controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur, which has largely remained untouched by the ongoing conflict.

ACJPS urged all warring parties in Sudan and their allies to adopt this approach to ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in areas that remain inaccessible or obstructed due to the war.
