The UN Security Council, chaired by the Republic of Korea, decided to renew sanctions on Sudan related to the conflict in the Darfur region for one year.

The 15-member council unanimously adopted Resolution 2791. The resolution renews the sanctions regime, which includes an arms embargo and targeted travel ban and asset freeze measures, until September 12, 2026.

The resolution extends the mandate of the Panel of Experts assisting the Sudan Sanctions Committee beyond March 12, 2026, until October 12, 2026, to align the timelines for renewing sanctions and the Panels mandate.

The resolution requests the Panel to submit a final report to the Security Council by July 13, 2026, containing its findings and recommendations, according to a Security Council document.

On September 12 of last year, the UN Security Council extended sanctions on Sudan, imposed since 2005, for another year, until September 2025.

At that time, the draft resolution, submitted by the United States, was unanimously approved by the 15 members of the Security Council. The resolution extends the sanctions, which include an arms embargo on the country, a travel ban on certain individuals and institutions, and an assets freeze, until September 12, 2025.

The Security Council adopted Resolution 1591 on March 29, 2005, imposing an arms embargo and sanctions against certain individuals and institutions involved in the conflict in Darfur.
